A high-level advocacy workshop for institutionalisation of Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach in Somalia organised by the UNICEF Somalia country team led by Chief of WASH Dara Johnston concluded on September 15 at Nairobi. The two-day workshop was facilitated by CLTS Foundation Global in which several senior government officials (Ministers/DGs) and donors and INGOs participated. The workshop was inaugurated by Ms Foroogh Foyouzat, Deputy Representative, UNICEF Somalia.

On the first day of the workshop, there were discussions on MDGs and CLTS and an analysis of the sanitation story in the last 15 years. Chief Macha of Choma district in Zambia shared  how through his relentless efforts, his chiefdom doubled sanitation coverage from 50 percent to 100 percent in less than two years, attaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in November 2009, and becoming the first chiefdom in Africa to be so recognised. He emphasised on the need for mobilising traditional chiefs in sanitation and CLTS interventions.After this there were group exercises where participants assessed Somalia’s current sanitation status and CLTS implementation in Somalia.

On the second day of the workshop, there were presentations from Zambia and Kenya on institutional mechanisms, scaling up strategies, best practices and innovations.Hon. Ruth Koki Mwanzia, County Minister for Heath and Sanitation, Kitui county,Kenya spoke about her experiences in her county. Kitui is set to become one of the first ODF counties in Kenya.

After this, there were presentations from the Somalian delegation on action plans and a discussion on mechanisms for inter and intra ministerial/institutional collaboration and scaling up CLTS by mainstreaming Natural leaders and Community Consultants.

This workshop will be followed by a two-day ( September 16 -17) technical workshop for scaling up CLTS with quality in Somalia.
