Dr. Kamal Kar (Founder & Project Director)
Dr. Kamal Kar is the pioneer of ‘Community Led Total Sanitation – CLTS’ approach which has successfully brought out 40 million people from the planet from the scourge of open defecation. These 40 million people are now living in Open Defecation Free (ODF) environment due to the rollout of CLTS approach as part of their respective country’s national sanitation policy.
He captured the imagination of the global sanitation sector when he pioneered the CLTS approach in Bangladesh in 1999-2000. This approach has now been rolling out in more than 70 countries of the planet.
The prestigious Foreign Policy Magazine of Washington DC selected Dr. Kar amongst the Top Hundred Global Thinkers of the World in 2010. Dr. Kar is the recipient of Sarphati Sanitation Lifetime Achievement Award 2015 given by World Waternet, Netherlands Water Partnership at Amsterdam. He is currently the Chairman of CLTS Foundation Global.
